Vacation 2010 - Day 10 - Juneau, AK

Wow!! Today was the day I was looking for no rain. The two major attractions to Alaska was the glaciers and whales. We got both today. First, we stopped at Mendenhall Glacier. It was beautiful. In addition to the glacier, we saw a bald eagle eating a fish on an iceberg just off shore. Amazing. The size and power of these glaciers is amazing. The glacier has retreated 2 miles since 1910. Sadly, the glacier is retreating at 200 feet per year. This had changed since 50 years ago when it was only 60 feet per year.

We also got to touch a piece of glacier ice. This ice is from icebergs. It is strange. It looks and feels like a bunch of ice cubes squashed together.

We also took a whale tour and some beautiful whales. I don't know why I enjoy that so much. My 4th whale tour and it never gets old. Its exciting to spot these giants. We got a bonus. Along our trip we say a group of nine bald eagles fishing just about 250 yards from the boat. They were circling around and diving to the water. We saw 2 juvenile eagles. Looks like the parents were training the kids. We also saw some in the trees. Truly amazing!!
